Bringing the Outdoors In
Adding greenery to your home instantly boosts your mood, purifies the air, and adds a vibrant pop of color to any room. However, if you have a history of accidentally killing your leafy friends, the world of houseplants can seem intimidating. Fear not—these beginner-friendly plants are virtually indestructible.
1. The Snake Plant (Sansevieria)
The ultimate beginner plant. It thrives on neglect, requires very little water, and can survive in incredibly low-light conditions. As a bonus, it is one of the best plants for filtering indoor air toxins.
2. ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia)
With its glossy, dark green leaves, the ZZ plant looks almost fake. It stores water in its thick rhizomes, meaning you only need to water it once every few weeks. It is perfect for frequent travelers or forgetful owners.
3. Pothos (Epipremnum aureum)
If you want a beautiful trailing plant to drape over a bookshelf, the Pothos is your best bet. It grows incredibly fast and clearly communicates when it needs water (the leaves will visibly droop, but perk right back up an hour after watering).
The Golden Rule of Plant Care
The number one reason beginners kill plants is overwatering. It is always better to underwater a plant than to drown its roots. Ensure all your pots have drainage holes, and always stick your finger an inch into the soil—if it feels moist, do not water it!
